Today´s challenges

The Bus industry is appealing, but the challenges are great. It is an industry characterized by tough contracts, low margins and an ever-present risk of being wrong in the calculations. We know that every dollar can determine the long-term profitability and see it as our mission to support you with the necessary onboard IT foundation that makes it possible to quickly and at a low cost install and use the right IT services.

You will need different onboard applications (video, ticketing, etc) to support the demands of different contracts and it is a challenge to find systems that are cost-efficient, well specified, interoperable and maintenance free. You risk of purchasing systems that does not work very well and where the maintenance costs skyrocket.

Buying the right bus for the job is an important key in all public transport businesses. For the onboard device installation to run smoothly you need clear specifications on how the systems should be implemented, how the cabling should be installed etc. Provided that you are clear in your orders, you will drastically reduce installation, maintenance and support of the onboard IT systems in the future. Due to our long experiences of vehicle gateway design and work with installation specifications towards vehicle manufacturers we are able to support you fully in this work. Our experience and knowledge from the work within the EBSF (European Bus of the Future) project added with a pragmatic view of today’s situation in a  public transport vehicle is in your favor for joint specification work towards bus manufacturers and suppliers of onboard devices.

Our belief is that standards will come to play a very important role in the future implementation of onboard IT- applications. Our continued engagement within the on-going standardization of onboard communication and integration platforms and the planned EBSF-II project will assure our customers a smooth and inexpensive ride towards lowering the IT costs of the company.

Why use a standardized Managed Vehicle Gateway

A Standardized Managed Vehicle Gateway is important in order to enable increased flexibility, lower costs and allow supplier independency.

Public Transport Operators and Authorities (PTAs) today suffers from high costs, low flexibility, and supplier lock-in effects due to their high dependency on suppliers for their onboard applications. The main reason to this twisted relationship between supplier and customer is the absence of standards. The customers are locked into monolith suppliers and proprietary systems that often make it hard to change system supplier for vehicle onboard systems. Pilotfish is active within standardization and on a daily basis helps the customers to take control over their onboard vehicle IT system. It is our belief that standards decrease supplier dependency, decrease costs, and increase flexibility as well as enhance performance.

Pilotfish offers a Managed Vehicle Gateway system that is future proof and updatable in order to meet future standards and needs. As a leading actor within standardization of vehicle gateways, communication, and integration platforms, Pilotfish is the obvious choice for your onboard Managed Vehicle Gateway.

Some advantages with Pilotfish® Vehicle OnLine

  • Lowered costs for public transport operators and authorities both when it comes to operating cost and initial investments.
  • Increased freedom of choice and flexibility for onboard applications with increased functionality and performance as a consequence.
  • Supplier independency. The customer no longer has to buy all services from one supplier. Situations where the suppliers take advantage of their monopoly position are avoided.
  • Shared usage of IT resources. E.g. communication, GPS, and driver login is reused by systems connected to the vehicle gateway to avoid duplicated information.
  • One common back-end interface for onboard application makes the system monitoring convenient.
  • Automatic inventory of onboard equipment.
  • Future proof and flexible solution that is possible to adapt to your future needs.

Centralized monitoring of vehicle gateways and onboard vehicle equipment

As more and more vehicle onboard applications are used, it is increasingly important to be able to identify the devices and monitor their performance. Every system needs their own monitoring and the number of systems together with the number of vehicles makes the monitoring complex and time consuming. Insufficient control over system identification and performance is a common difficulty that is solved by the Pilotfish® Vehicle OnLine. This drastically simplify the everyday work for IT-administrators and workshop staff.

Introduction of vehicle gateways with standardized communication between onboard vehicle equipment

The activity level is high when it comes to standardization of public transportation in Europe, not least regarding integration of onboard vehicle applications. Pilotfish is taking part in the proceedings of CEN TC278 and is an active part of the standardization work connected to the vehicle gateway and the onboard integration platform of the future. The work is mainly performed within the CEN (European Committee for Standardization) and the EBSF (European Bus System of the Future) EU-projects.

Another area within the frame of EBSF is standardized cables and contacts. This will enable the vehicle manufacturers to prepare for onboard equipment installations with lowered costs and time efficient installations as a consequence.

The use of BUS-FMS, a standard interface to vehicle data of commercial vehicles, is expected to increase in the future and EN 50/155 is used more and more. The increased use and accuracy of vehicle data enables for smart applications with high precision. A high performing onboard managed vehicle gateway is essential to take full advantage of these applications in an effective manner. Pilotfish works close with several of the actors in front edge of the BUS-FMS work and have knowledge about ongoing discussions and future functionality.

Higher bandwidth and increased availability

High bandwidth is often required by onboard vehicle applications, especially for passenger WiFi services and software downloads. The availability of high bandwidth increases but is often absent in rural areas. The onboard platform is therefore dependent upon different communication standards such as GSM, 3G, 4G, and WiFi. The Pilotfish® Vehicle OnLine managed gateway is adapted to all these standards and a unique modular system makes it possible to expand with different modems depending of your specific needs.

It is our belief that all public transport operators will install vehicle gateways in the near future.
