CASE: GAMLA UPPSALA BUSS

Real-time driver support for more efficient operations

Gamla Uppsala Buss (GUB) operates public transport in Uppsala, Sweden, with a fleet of close to 200 buses and more than 500 drivers. To strengthen driver support and improve daily operations, GUB has invested in more accessible, real-time information for drivers. By integrating LinjeGuiden from Hogia into the Pilotfish® Driver Console as part of its onboard ecosystem, drivers gain better support in both planned and unexpected situations.

Background and challenge

Before the implementation, driver support relied on a mix of communication channels such as printed materials and radio updates from traffic control. While functional, this made it difficult to ensure that drivers always had access to clear and up-to-date information.

At the same time, the onboard environment was already complex, with multiple systems competing for the driver’s attention. Adding additional hardware, such as extra screens, was not a viable option as it risked increasing cognitive load, making it even more challenging to handle situations where routes or conditions changed. For new drivers, or those less familiar with the routes, adapting without clear, visual guidance could be difficult.

In a city where traffic conditions evolve over time, for example due to long-term infrastructure projects such as the introduction of a new tram system, the need for accessible, real-time driver support becomes even more evident.

GUB needed a solution that could provide real-time, visual guidance directly in the existing driver interface, without adding complexity.

Solution

The solution builds on GUB’s existing Pilotfish setup, including the Vehicle Gateway, as part of the Pilotfish® Vehicle Communication Platform (VCP). This provides a common foundation for onboard communication, data handling and system integration.

On top of this platform, LinjeGuiden from Hogia, a well-established driver support tool, has been integrated directly into the Pilotfish® Driver Console. Instead of introducing a separate system with its own screen and login, it is now seamlessly embedded in the existing driver interface.

Drivers can access route guidance and map-based navigation directly within the interface they already use. Through integration with the alcolock system, drivers are automatically logged in using their existing tag, eliminating additional login steps and simplifying daily workflows.

The solution has been rolled out across the fleet and enables traffic control to update routes dynamically in real time. Drivers receive a clear visual indication when changes occur and can immediately switch to a map view with the updated route.

In addition, the solution provides access to digital driving schedules, driver instructions and operational documentation – replacing previously printed materials with digital alternatives.

Result

The implementation has strengthened how GUB communicates and manages operational changes.

Drivers now have direct access to updated route information in a clear, visual format, reducing reliance on radio communication and manual instructions. This is particularly valuable in situations involving sudden disruptions, where traffic control can quickly adjust routes and share updates in real time.

For new drivers, the system provides an important support layer, making it easier to navigate unfamiliar routes and adapt to changes with confidence.

“When routes change, having clear, visual guidance directly in the system makes a real difference – both for efficiency and for driver confidence.”

– Elinor Hydfors, Head of Traffic Development, Gamla Uppsala Buss (GUB)

By integrating the functionality into the existing driver interface, GUB has avoided adding extra hardware to the driver environment – reducing complexity while improving usability.

The shift from printed materials to digital information has also streamlined workflows and reduced administrative overhead, making processes faster and easier to update.

The result: stronger driver support, more efficient operations and a more flexible transport system.
